DDR5 RAM is the fifth generation of Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DDR SDRAM). It is an integral part of the PC hardware that stores all your games and running applications. Specifically, this version aims to increase the bandwidth and density of RAM while reducing its power consumption.

The separate JEDEC standard LPDDR5 (Low Power Double Data Rate 5), intended for laptops and smartphones, was released in February 2019.

A recent decision Feedback Equalization (DFE) feature allows I/O speed scalability for higher bandwidth and performance improvement. DDR5 supports more bandwidth than its precursor, DDR4, with 4.8 gigabits per second possible, but not shipping at launch.

Traditional DDR5 memory speeds range from 4800 to 7200 million transfers per second (PC5-38400 to PC5-57600). More increased rates may be added later, as happened with earlier generations.

DDR5 RAMs operate at a lower voltage, i.e., 1.1V, compared to DDR4 RAM, which runs at 1.2V. Moreover, they integrate PMIC into the actual module. PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) converts the 5V supplied by the motherboard to the 1.1V needed by the memory modules.

DDR5 octuples the highest DIMM capacity from 64 GB to 512 GB. DDR5 will also have more elevated frequencies than DDR4.

DDR5 will have about the same latency as DDR4 and DDR3.
