LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) is a backplane technology implemented in OLED displays. It allows the screens to work at variable refresh rates as well as consume less battery compared to a standard OLED display.

But LTPO OLED displays are currently found only on flagship devices. It would take time to see this technology implemented in more devices at affordable prices.
LTPO is identified as a tweaked version of OLED. However, it is still categorized differently from a standard OLED panel. An OLED display contains an LTPS backplane, whereas an LTPO OLED panel includes a blend of LTPS and IGZO backplanes.
In the case of Apple, it utilizes LTPS TFTs in combination with Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (IGZO) TFTs. Samsung also has its proprietary technology for LTPO sAMOLED panels utilizing a mix of LTPS TFTs and Hybrid-oxide and Polycrystalline silicon (HOP).
Other displays like LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) displays don’t allow dynamic refresh rates except when an extra component is deployed.
Due to this reason, plenty of phones can only switch between 60 Hz and 120 Hz, or 90 Hz and 120 Hz refresh rates. On the other hand, LTPO phone displays can support a refresh rate as low as 1 Hz.
The battery consumption of the display is a priority area for further optimization. Therefore, many phone manufacturers are switching to LTPO panels on flagship phones.
In the structure of LTPO technology, LTPS devices and oxide devices can be flexibly switched at different stages to maximize the advantages of each, and switching to oxide devices in the light-emitting stage will enable low-frequency driving that ordinary LTPS cannot achieve.
And in the OLED panel display static screen, switching to oxide semiconductor devices can maintain the electrical signal in the capacitor (basically no leakage); when the screen changes, you can switch to LTPS devices, and the electrical signal in the capacitor continues to LTPS devices, without frequent replenishment, to achieve a dynamic refresh rate display.
While avoiding the LTPS high refresh rate display low frame, it enables dynamic refresh rate display. It avoids the unnecessary power consumption caused by frequent charging of capacitors when LTPS displays low frame rates.
An LTPO OLED display can dynamically switch between refresh rates. In this process, it doesn’t use an additional hardware component between the GPU and the graphics controller.
Consequently, it saves a significant amount of battery life because your phone need not have to render as many frames for the task being carried out.
Companies came up with LTPO technology to solve this problem by variably changing the refresh rate. As you might expect, high refresh rates consume more battery, and lower numbers translate to less battery use.
By dynamically changing the refresh rate, OLED displays cut down power consumption.
LTPO process is relatively more complex than LTPS, and at this stage, the related OLED panels are challenging to manufacture, pricey, and have low yields.
When looking at a static image, there is a drop in the refresh rate. This results in a reduction in processor load and power needs. On the other hand, it can be escalated to the maximum when playing a game during which the extra frames prove to be helpful.
