The battle of the web browsers has extended to the mobiles and tablets. While the desktop browser market share is mostly dominated by Microsoft (Internet Explorer & Edge), the mobile market share is primarily dominated by Google and Apple (Android Browser, Chrome & Safari). So, in a nutshell, if you are building a browser, it needs to have excellent features to grab any market share. You will not even find Opera (Excluding Opera Mini) or UC browser in the primary list since they are categorized as “Others.” Opera browser to differentiate itself in the browser market is currently offering a fantastic feature which no one else is now offering. Yes, we are talking about the Ad-supported Free Opera VPN. But before we go into the details, let’s have a look at the current global market share for Mobile browsers:

The browser market share is very dynamic, and the landscape changes every few years. Will the Opera browser be able to grab market share in the next few years? We’ll have to wait and find out. For now, let’s look at its killer features.

Presenting the Free Opera VPN

Opera free VPN is currently offering unlimited data transfers. What this means is that you can browse the internet without any data cap. The free opera VPN is integrated into the Opera desktop browser. For Android and iOS users, however, you will need to download the VPN App from the App Store. Unlike the desktop browser, the free Opera VPN app is a standalone app which needs to be installed separately for Android and iOS. The mobile app also has an advantage over its desktop counterpart. Once you configure the mobile app, the entire WiFi and Mobile Data traffic go through the VPN network. Irrespective of whether you use the Opera browser or not, you can still use the VPN to access resources over the internet.

Quick Note: Torrent Downloads are not supported over the Free Opera VPN

To entirely browser anonymously, Opera recommends you to enable both the Adblocker as well as the VPN. It is because users using the free Opera VPN can still be tracked using tracking cookies by Ad networks. Even though browser cookies are not a security threat, they do store user preferences, online browsing activity, etc. Users can also clean their cookies and use a VPN to connect to websites anonymously. So, let’s look at how you can enable and use the Opera VPN on different devices. Currently, Opera provides you free VPN access from the following locations:

  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • Singapore
  • Canada
  • United States

When you access websites using the free Opera VPN, your site is based on the country that you select. This enables you to browse country-specific content. Access content typically blocked at work or even YouTube videos which are restricted based on your location. In addition to that, you can hide your public IP address and more secure open WiFi connections.

Step 2: Tap on Allow on the pop-up menu “Opera VPN” would like to add VPN Configurations.

Step 3: Tap to enable all three options based on user preferences.

Once set, you can start web browsing or watch YouTube videos based on the VPN location context. All your Data traffic will now go though the VPN connection and tracking you back would be difficult, if not impossible. You can optionally turn off GPS if you want to avoid exposing your location. We checked the VPN speeds to cross check Opera’s claims and we got satiesfying results. See our speedtest below:
