Amlogic is an American technology company that predominantly focused on designing and selling SoC integrated circuits. Amlogic processors have been mainly used in Android-based TV’s and IPTV/OTT set-top boxes, media dongles, smart TVs, and tablets. Amlogic uses ARM architecture in the majority of its products. They are a fabless semiconductor company, which means that they design the SoC’s but a third party contractor manufactures them.

Amlogic S905x vs S912 SoC Detailed Comparison

Both S912 and S905X is unveiled by the Amlogic recently. Both the SoCs are somewhat similar to each other regarding overall performance. However, the S912, as you might have guessed from its nomenclature, is positioned slightly higher than the S905X.

S912 is a high-end UHD HDR multimedia SoC with a 64-bit ARM architecture. It is designed to enable all kinds of exciting user experiences with its high-performance octa-core CPU and T800 series GPU. S912 is Amlogic’s best SoC to date. It delivers home theatre-level entertainment with 4K & HDR compatibility and excellent audio and video processing capabilities.

On the other hand, the S905X is a successor of the S905. While S905 is still slightly better than the S905X, but the latter comes with some new features that are quite useful. The S905X is a UHD HDR multimedia SoC with 64-bit architecture just like the S912 SoC. It is designed to be used on  OTT/IPTV STB, TV dongles and smart home devices. Like the S912, S905X also possess the excellent audio and video processing capabilities.

Both the SoC supports operator-level security. On the GPU front, the S912 ARM Mali T-82 is better than the slightly dated Mali T450 GPU used in the S905X SoC. Talking about the CPU, S912 uses an octa-core ARM Cortex A53  while the S905X has quad-core Cortex A53 CPU. So obviously S912 has got some advantage here, especially in multithreading.

Both the SoC’s has the same video processing capabilities, but S912 has faster response time than the S905X. Amlogic S912 and S905X supports UHD 4K 60fps HW decoding, with multiple formats support including H.265/VP9 10-bit, H.264 and AVS+, HDR10 and HLG HDR processing and FHD 1080p 60fps HW encoding, supports H.264

Overall as we have already stated that S912 is slightly better has, it has got better CPU and GPU, but S905X is also in the race. Considering the price difference, both the SoCs are worth the money. Below are the specs of Amlogic S912 and S905X in tabular form.
