The FreeSync technology from AMD has indeed been quite a success. The initial FreeSync branding was a huge accomplishment, followed by FeeSync 2 and FreeSync 2 HDR. However, AMD has decided to simplify the certification of FreeSync devices and introduced a straight branding exercise.

The FreeSync basic variant now remains what it was before, and the D=FreeSync 2 HDR has been rebranded to FreeSync Premium Pro. There is now a new middle tier that refers to FreeSync Premium. Here is a quick high-level comparison table:
All versions of FreeSync are based on VESA’s Adaptive-Sync protocol, so it operates over DisplayPort (USB Type-C included) and HDMI ports. For a display to be FreeSync-certified, it must pass AMD’s testing process, which looks at its Adaptive-Sync support range, brightness, color range, and more.
The best gaming monitors typically come with either a flavor of FreeSync or G-Sync. Some general use and professional monitors also use one of these types of Adaptive-Sync. One key difference is that in addition to DisplayPort (which also works over USB-C), FreeSync works with the traditional HDMI interfaces. In the case of Nvidia’s G-Sync, it only works with DisplayPort, except for some limited LG’s G-Sync Compatible TVs.
The FreeSyncTM Premium Pro tier was previously known as FreeSync 2 HDR
It may not be the case if you are looking at the new monitors with the latest technologies. It is just a rebranding exercise, and the existing monitors will soon begin being made available with new branding.
Table of Contents
As we already mentioned, the existing monitors will be equivalent to the FreeSync Premium Pro as long as they are FreeSync 2 HDR compatible as per the new branding. From that perspective, here are a few monitors worthy of being referenced as the FreeSync Premium Pro monitors. The new branding will appear on the latest lot of the same monitors or the latest products whenever they are launched.

When we compiled this post, no monitors specifically launched with the FreeSync Premium or FreeSync Premium Pro rating officially mentioned. It is just a few days that AMD has released the new rebranding for the technology. We would expect the monitor manufacturers to offer more models in line with AMD’s branding whenever they are ready for it. The latest batch of the existing models that can be classified as per the new rebranding will come with the new rating.
Also, we must highlight that AMD is NOT new technology being launched by FreeSync Premium and FreeSync Premium Pro. This is a rebranding exercise to clarify the confusion among the manufacturers and buyers of the monitors (or even laptops and TVs) concerning the FreeSync, FreeSync 2, and FreeSync 2 HDR. Like the one opted, for now, a simplified approach should be helpful enough in many ways.
When the manufacturers specifically begin mentioning FreeSync Premium and FreeSync Premium Pro in their products, we will update the post – with either the new products or the redefined product catalog. Until then, the list above should suffice in understanding the basic concept of the new terminology.
AMD FreeSync is a new technology found on gaming monitors, laptops, and TVs and is aimed at helping address screen tearing, stuttering, and input lag. This is a much-needed change in the case of fast-paced games and videos. The technology was launched in 2015 and was designed to work with an AMD graphic card. With over 1000 FreeSync certified displays available, AMD has decided to rebrand the FreeSync technology in three tiers – FreeSync, FreeSync Premium, and FreeSync Premium Pro.
Screen Tearing is an issue that seriously affects games and other sorts of videos. It can happen when the game’s frame rate fails to match the refresh rate offered by the monitor. A FreeSync display attempts to resolve the issue.
A FreeSync display comes with an effective refresh rate. This is referred to as a variable refresh rate or VRR. The monitor will sync its minimum and maximum refresh rates with the frame rate of the graphic card used.
FreeSync is based on VESA’s Adaptive-Sync protocol. Thus, it will work on DisplayPort and HDMI ports. AMD uses a host of testing options to arrive at the certification. AMD will check out the Adaptive-Sync support range, brightness, and color range before certifying a monitor to be FreeSync compliant.
Before we can delve into the differences between the three tiers of FreeSync technology, it should be noticed that AMD has not developed any new technology for stutter-free performance. This is only a rebranding exercise, and the previous generations of the FreeSync monitors (or TVs and laptops) now come with new branding.
The original FreeSync now stands unchanged at FreeSync; The FreeSync 2 HDR will now be referred to as FreeSync Premium Pro. FreeSync Premium is a new middle tier that performs better than FreeSync basic but stays lower than FreeSync Premium Pro.
The following table will give you an insight into what to expect for the three variants of FreeSync technology –
Previously known as FreeSync 2 HDR
The above table indicates that the existing monitors are recategorized and rebranded into the new categories. There are no new monitors launched with new technologies.
All the FreeSync monitors – whether FreeSync, FreeSync Premium, or FreeSync Premium Pro – focus on screen tearing and flickering issues. FreeSync Premium, however, makes it a notch up. It requires the monitor to have a refresh rate of 120 Hz and above when working in a full HD resolution. The low rate compensation will ensure that the frames display multiple times when the framerate falls below the lowest supported one on the monitor. That would mean you will continue to have smoother gameplay at all the supported framerates.
AMD claims that there are more than 300 FreeSync Premium monitors currently available.
If your FreeSync Premium monitor supports HDR compatibility, it will have FreeSync Premium Pro compatibility. The rating was known till this rebranding as FreeSync 2 HDR. A FreeSync Premium Pro offers a low latency performance.
FreeSync Premium Pro also ensures that you have access to more than 400 nits of brightness on HDR. It also comes with an LFC functionality as with the FreeSync Premium. Note that having access to a FreeSync Premium Pro does not necessarily have access to the best gaming performance on every game. There are a few games that may not support it. Check if your game supports it.
For using any FreeSync in any form, you need access to a FreeSync certified monitor. You will also need to have access to a PC with an AMD graphics card. In the case of a PC game, your system needs to support DisplayPort or an HDMI connection. You will also need to have access to a Radeon Software graphics driver. You will need to turn it on through the AMD Radeon Settings.
Well, it is Nvidia that has been assumed to be at the core of this change. It may be remembered that the concept of FreeSync came up when Nvidia launched its G-Sync compatibility. The G-Sync harmony was achieved with a physical component that you need to install on the monitor.
While Nvidia depended on the physical option, AMD developed the software options for screen tearing. This made almost every monitor compatible with FreeSync. However, Nvidia was soon ready with a plan to change the scenario further. They provided the users to use the FreeSync capabilities of the monitors. Likewise, they introduced the three categories for the G -Sync technology – G-Sync Compatible, G-Sync, and G-Sync Ultimate.
AMD decided to bring in the new changes and introduced the FreeSync Premium and FreeSync Premium Pro and the first FreeSync option.
That was all we have had concerning the differences between FreeSync, FreeSync Premium, and FreeSync Premium Pro. Before you can jump to conclusions, let us bring to your attention that the new FreeSync variations announced by AMD are not designed to get any monitor tech. This has only been a rebranding exercise, and the existing monitors (or TVs and laptops) will be recategorized as per the latest standards.
The future monitors and other displays will come with the new nomenclature and categorization. The current breed of FreeSync 2 HDR displays will be categorized as FreeSync Premium Pro. Check out the monitors and displays you currently are using and determine which category your monitor belongs to.
