Tech Posts How To Setup and Configure Google WiFi Router Step by Step December 8, 201612042 views0 Share By IG Share Google released a new WiFi router for home networking made easy for non-technical users. It’s predecessor, the OnHub was a collaboration with TP-Link and Asustek, both Taiwanese manufacturers of networking products. However, in this case, Google is marketing this device directly as “MadebyGoogle“. When you configure Google WiFi Router, you can connect a maximum of 4 other Google WiFi routers to form a mesh WiFi network in your home. This ensures full WiFi connectivity even in the remotest corners of your home. Here is the breakup: Note: If you buy something from our links, we might earn a commission. See our disclosure statement. 0-1500 sqft – 1 Google WiFi Router recommended 1500 – 3000 sqft – 2 Google WiFi router recommended 3000 – 4500 sqft – 3 or 4 Google WiFi routers recommended based on the house layout. Might need more power if there are thick brick walls in between etc. The Google Router will use the WiFi bands with less congestion (2.4 ghz or 5 ghz) and automatically switch to another router for better signal strength on the fly. Here is the Offical Video from Google explaining how to “Configure Google WiFi Router“ Here are the Step by Step Instructions to Configure Google WiFi Router Step 1: The device can only be configured with its companion App. Download the App for Android and iOS respectively. Step 2: Router placements are important. Don’t hide them. Place the router in an open area for more effective coverage. Step 3: The Google WiFi router is not a modem. As a prerequisite, you would need an internet connected modem first. Connect the internet ethernet cables from the modem to the bottom of the Google Router (Port Marked as the “Internet“) . Another gigabit ethernet port can be used for a wired connection. Step 4: Scan the QR Code using the companion app. The QR code is located at the bottom of the device. Step 5: Once paired, proceed to setup a WiFi connection. Give a name for your WiFi connection and tap on next. If you have more than once Google WiFi device, proceed to join them in the same network. See the screenshot below for reference: In case you have purchased more than 1 device(s) then you will have to repeat the process of scanning the QR code from the bottom of the device to create a secure connection. You can also test the WiFi signal strength by going into “Settings>Network check>Test mesh”. Other features of the companion app include control over WiFi devices with the ability to pause internet services. You can also prioritize your connection for certain devices over the other.
