ARM Mali G76 3eemc4 vs Adreno 616 vs Adreno 640 Specs Comparison

When it comes to the GPUs, the battle between MediaTek and Qualcomm is known well enough. Both of them have been efficient players with a few good options. The recently launched ARM Mali G76 should be a case in point. How does the GPU from MediaTek compare with the Adreno 616 and Adreno 640? We thought we would give it thought by comparing them together (ARM Mali G76 3eemc4 vs Adreno 616 vs Adreno 640).

Of course, comparing the GPUs may not be an easy task as such. However, we will attempt checking them out in a comparison chart.

ARM Mali G76 – An Overview

Source: ARM

The ARM Mali G76 is a graphic processor designed for use with the ARM-based SoCs. It has been specially optimized for use with Android-based processors. The GPU was introduced with the Kirin 980 in 2018. A prime example can be Huawei Mate 20.

Based on the second generation of Bifrost architecture, the GPU integrates 10 of the 20 cores for competent graphics performance. Offering a bigger buffer of 16x anti-aliasing, the GPU has been observed to provide a high-end efficiency in machine learning capabilities.

When compared to the older generation Mali G72, the G76 offers you an enhanced performance level with double performance per cluster. It does work with almost every graphics API that includes OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.0, OpenCL 2.0, DirectX 12 FL11_1, and Renderscript.

Adreno 640 – A Sneak Peak

Coming from Qualcomm, the Adreno 640 stands for quality. The GPU is integrated with Snapdragon 855 SoC. The chip has been made available from the early 2019 and is used in almost all major Android releases involving the Snapdragon 855 processor.

The GPU is designed as a smartphone and tablet GPU. It has been observed to offer a 20 percent better performance over its predecessor Adreno 630. This has been achieved with the help of 50% more FP16, and FP32 compute units on Adreno 640 when compared to Adreno 630. The 7 nm manufacturing process should be yet another added advantage.

Yet another plus point with the Adreno 640 is its support for Vulkan 1.1 API, which other 600 series GPUs may not be able to support.

Adreno 616 – A concise review

The Adreno 616 is specially designed for use with mobile phones and is a mobile graphics card. It is designed to work with upper mid-range devices. The GPU comes integrated with Snapdragon 710.

The graphics card is 30 percent faster than the previous generation, i.e. Adreno 512. The GPU can efficiently work with Vulkan 1.0, OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 2.0 and DirectX 11 (FL 11_1).

The Comparison Table: ARM Mali G76 3eemc4 vs Adreno 616 vs Adreno 640

Having gone through a little detail about each of the options in the above paragraphs, here is a head to head comparison to understand it in a better manner.

Which smartphones come with the specific GPUs?

Well, providing the exact statistic in this context may not be possible — however, the following table to satisfy the query in many cases.

ARM Mali G76 Adreno 616 Adreno 640
Honor 20 Google Pixel 3a Asus ZenFone 6 ZS630KL
Honor 20 Pro Lenovo Z5 Pro LG G8s ThinQ
Huawei Mate 20 Nokia 8.1 One Plus 7
Huawei Mate 20 Pro Oppo R17 Pro One Plus 7 Pro
Huawei P 30 Realme X Samsung Galaxy Fold
Huawei P 30 Pro Realme XT Sony Xperia 1
Oppo Reno Xiaomi Mi 9
Oppo Reno 5G
Samsung Galaxy S10+ 5G
Vivo Nex 3
One Plus 7T
Xiaomi Black Shark 2

As you can see, the ARM Mali G76 comes with the Kirin 980 and can only be found on the Huawei range of devices. Of course, we would look ahead to find it on the other devices as well quite soon. On the other hand, you will find that the Adreno 616 and 640 are located on a wide range of smartphones across multiple manufacturers.

The Adreno 640 is best suited for high-end devices and generally observed on the premium and flagship devices from different manufacturers. The Adreno 616, on the other hand, is available on the mid-range or upper mid-range devices, as can be found on the above list.

That was a complete comparison between the three competing GPUs. Choosing the best among them is out of the question as they come with their advantages and specifications. The actual use of the graphics processor on your phone will be dependent upon the processor used on it as generally, the GPU comes integrated with the processor of the manufacturer’s choice.

Conclusion

We assume the comparison chart, as offered here, should help you make a well-informed choice between the three graphic units and have a clear understanding of their capabilities before you can choose a device featuring them.

Even then, the practical experience has indicated that the Adreno 616 and 640 come with enhanced features and capabilities when you compare it to the ARM Mali G 76.

That was all we have concerning the three processors. If you think you can chip in with more information, do share your inputs with us.
