Ryzen 5 2500U Vs Ryzen 7 2700U

In this post, we compare the Ryzen 5 2500U Vs Ryzen 7 2700U. These are AMD’s mid vs top-tier offerings from its current product lineup. We have already seen some significant benchmarks for the Ryzen 5 2500U which in some cases faster than its more expensive Intel rivals. In fact, if you missed it, we have already listed out the latest laptops with Ryzen mobile on a different post.

If you are new to the Ryzen product offering, here is a quick comparison chart of the various AMD Ryzen mobile offerings:

Ryzen Mobile processor series is finally out to power laptops and Ultrabooks. The Ryzen Mobile processor series is so far the AMD’s most advanced processors, especially for the thin, lightweight laptops. Here, we are going to compare two of AMD’s top end Ryzen Mobile processor, Ryzen 5 2500U vs Ryzen 7 2700U.

It was evident that Ryzen 7 2700U is more potent than the Ryzen 5 2500U, but the Ryzen 7’s high price won’t be affordable for everyone. Also, not everyone needs such a robust system. So we will detail out a quick comparison of Ryzen 5 2500 and Ryzen 7 2700U. This will give you an idea which is best for you.

Ryzen 5 2500U Vs Ryzen 7 2700U

With the Ryzen processing cores and Vega graphics, AMD promises a comeback to the performance laptops. The Ryzen series is built on AMD SenseMI technology to deliver a brilliant processor. The SenseMI technology is a set of machine learning and auto-adaptive features that help AMD Ryzen processors to customize its performance as per the application demand and preserve power.

Both Ryzen 7 2700U and Ryzen 5 2500U are quad-core processors with eight threads. But the difference is in the clock frequency and GPU of both the processors. While the former has 2.2 GHz as base clock speed with maximum turbo core speed of up to 3.8 GHz, the latter one has 2 GHz of clock speed and 3.6 GHz of maximum turbo core speed.

The second main difference is the GPU unit. Ryzen 5 2500U features Vega 8 integrated graphics while the Ryzen 7 2700U packs Vega 10 integrated graphics. Vega 10 having 10 GPU cores is apparently much better than the Vega 8, with 8 GPU cores. Both the processors share the same L2 cache of 2 MB and a shared L3 cache of 4 MB memory. Unlike the Ryzen series, the Ryzen Mobile processors are not unlocked, means you can’t overclock them.

Ryzen 5 2500U and Ryzen 7 2700U are built on the 14 nm CMOS fabrication process (0.014 μm, 1.4e-5 mm) and support dual-channel DDR4 RAM over a 128-bit memory interface. Both the Ryzen Mobile processor has very low TDP of 15 watts. AMD promises them to be both power-efficient yet high performing processors. Overall, The Ryzen 7 2700U and Ryzen 5 2500U are amazing chips for notebooks.  While the Ryzen 5 2500U could easily handle most of the high-end software and games, but with the flagship Ryzen 7 2700U, you will apparently get far better performance whether you are multitasking or running heavy software or games.

Here is a 1:1 comparison table, see below:

Conclusion

We are happy that AMD is back in the game for both laptops and desktops. For the last couple of years, AMD was only a secondary x86 manufacturer who offered cheaper CPUs for the entry-level segment, No More! AMD’s current roadmap looks promising, and we are eagerly waiting for the mobile Ryzen Pro processors with a higher TDP in Q2 2018.

The new 12nm ‘12LP’ process from GlobalFoundries is expected to offer 10% plus better performance per watt than its predecessor, the 14nm ‘14LPP’ process.
On the GPU side, AMD’s road-map was a little more conservative. AMD’s focus will be on “Radeon RX” Vega Mobile discrete GPUs for its laptop lineup. See below:

If 2017 were a busy year for AMD, 2018 would be more work, considering the multiple product launches and a new 12 nm+ process optimization for its CPUs.
