How to Avoid Windows 10 Upgrade and Notifications

Windows 10 upgrade notifications are automatically blocked on devices which does not have the necessary Windows update (Windows 7 or 8, 8.1), or it is not a Qualified device (Windows XP, Vista). In this post, I am going to talk about How to Avoid Windows 10 Upgrade and Notifications.

There are two scenarios, where this is applicable:

For Enterprise Editions, your system administrator will mostly disable the upgrade process using the following methods:

Group Policy

You need to download and install new updates from here  (Windows 7) and here  (Windows 8.1) to enable you to block upgrades to Windows 10 through Windows Update. These updates install a new Group Policy Setting. Computers that have this Group Policy Setting enabled will never detect, download, or install an upgrade to the latest version of Windows as per Microsoft official documentation.

Enable “Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update” to disable Windows 10 upgrade.

Registry Entry to Disable Windows Update:
Subkey: HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1
How to remove the “Get Windows 10 App” Notification

There are 3 different ways to block the notification.

  1. Block the Get Windows 10″ application by blocking the GWX.exe from the Windows Task Manager.
  2. Disable using Group Policy (Mentioned Above)
  3. Disable “Get Windows 10” application from the Task Scheduler (taskschd.msc)
