Eken H9 Ultra HD Action Camera Review Specifications and Sample Videos

Eken H9 is a WiFi enabled action camera with a maximum supported resolution of 4k Ultra HD @ 30 FPS. It is arguably the poor man’s action camera, loaded with features and generously provided accessories. We have been playing with the Eken H9 for a week or so. We like the Camera so far, and in this post, we do an Eken H9 Ultra HD Action Camera Review.

It took about a month’s time to receive our order from China. The camera is mostly sold through online retailers like Amazon, Aliexpress, Gearbest, etc. A standard Go-Pro silver edition would cost many times more than that of a regular Eken H9. There are many bundled options available with the camera. We went with the default package, and that came with a lot of generously provided accessories. We found out that the Eken H9 works best with 1080p @ 60 FPS (1920*1080 resolution). The 4k videos captured are basically upscaled version of a 1080p video taking extra space. A micro-sd card was not provided in the box we had to use our own. A Sandisk 32 gb Class 10 micro-sd card was used for the tests that supported 4k video captures. The video quality was not as good as a GoPro or a Xiaomi Yi action camera. However, it was satiesfactory, considering its price point.

The camera can capture images with up to 12 MP resolution. In our tests, we found that the best image quality came when captured with 4MP, 5MP or 8 MP. We suspect that this might be due to upscale of images as well. The camera lens does provide a depth of field/bokeh effect, but the focus is far from accurate.

You can also use the Eken H9 as a dashcam. The menu system supports looped video and time-lapse. You can setup custom intervals for time-lapse video/image capture.

Connecting the Eken H9 to WiFi

By turning On the Camera and pressing the down key on its side instantly activates the WiFi feature. You can use the Android companion app to connect to the device directly over WiFi. The WiFi performance is good, and lagging was minimal. However, the App is buggy and badly needs an update. While testing we encountered frequent crashing and the only way to avoid it is to follow the steps below:

• Ensure to turn off the Mobile Data on your phone before connecting
• Ensure that the Camera is loaded with a micro-sd card
• Avoid pressing the shutter button continuously on the app

If you do not follow the above steps, the camera will hang, and the only way to resolve this is to remove the battery. You can download Ez iCam from the Google Play store to get started.

Overall, this camera is featured packed with some hits and misses.

• Poor Battery performance (30 minutes – 45 minutes per charge)
• The Android App is buggy
• Video quality @4K is not good
• Inaccurate focusing
