Best ECC DDR4 Memory For AMD Threadripper 1950X & 1920 CPUs

878

With the release of AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPU’s, AMD is allowing you to use both ECC and non-ECC DDR4 memory modules. Unlike Intel, which pushes you to buy their Xeon lineup, AMD is offering the flexibility to use both memory-types (ECC & non-ECC) on a consumer desktop PC. In case if you have decided to go with an ECC based memory module, check out our list of the best ECC DDR4 Memory for your PC build.

But, before we go into the list, let’s clarify what ECC memory is and how is it beneficial.

Best ECC DDR4 Memory

The acronym ECC stands for “Error Correction Code.”  It protects the system from data loss or corruption. By using an additional DRAM on the existing module, it stores parity bits to detect data corruption. The parity bits checks and identifies in real time of any errors that might occur during reading and writing data from the system memory. The parity bits are assigned to the large chunks of data to detect errors and fix them.

Some non-ECC memory does error detection but not prevention. For non-ECC memory, the DRAM chips can directly talk to the memory controller (DDR3 or DDR4). In the case of buffered ECC modules, the DRAM’s have an additional register between them and the memory controller. Typical use cases include networking equipment, cloud computing data centers, High-Performance Computing, HADOOP Big Data clusters and more.

In the case of Ryzen Threadripper, this would we the first time where end users, content creators, and possible gamers can use ECC memory in their PC build.

<Quick Update> We have received a lot of questions from our dear readers regarding support for “Registered ECC RAM Modules” for AMD Threadripper CPU’s. Some of your had reservations about the AMD’s stand regarding this. Thus, we raised a ticket with AMD and here is what AMD support had to say. Screenshot below:

Hopefully, this clarifies, and we guess it is up to the motherboard manufacturers to include support. Please refer to your motherboard manufacturers website for more information.

<Update 2>

AMD has come back to us with a clarification only this time the scenario changes. AMD’s Tech support now has clarified (On the same ticket) that the Ryzen Threadripper CPU’s does not support buffered DDR4 memory modules. See the clarification email below:

So we guess, even though the registered ECC DIMMS are working, the ECC registers are not being used for error detection. I guess this privilege is reserved for the EPYC platform.

Best ECC DDR4 Memory Modules

Some of the memory modules listed below are also buffered modules. While this is not directly related to ECC mechanism, the buffered modules refer to the presence of an additional register between the DRAM and the system memory controller. Not all ECC RAM modules are registered. However, all buffered memory modules have ECC in them.

So, now that we are clear with the use cases and the technicalities of buffered ECC memory modules, let;s go ahead and list them out.

All the memory sets or modules discussed above are buffered memories. Now, we will have a look at some top unbuffered ECC DDR4 memories available out there. The main difference between buffered and unbuffered memory is the system effectiveness. Buffered memory is known for its impressive speed, while unbuffered memory delivers remarkable stability and reliability. Moreover, there are also some minor differences including cost, types of application, power load, etc. Consider the following table:

Buffered Memory Unbuffered Memory
More expensiveLess expensive
Suitable for workstations and serversSuitable for personal systems/desktops
One clock cycle fewerNo clock cycle fewer
Excessively stable and reliableProvides standard stability and reliability
Takes less electrical loadTakes slightly more electrical load

With that said, here is the list of some unbuffered ECC DDR4 memories:
