EMC announces New Xtrem Family of Flash Products

EMC Corporation today announced the EMC® Xtrem™ Family of Flash-optimized server and storage products and introduced a new line of EMC XtremSF™ PCIe-based Flash cards that dramatically accelerate application performance.
XtremSF is server Flash hardware, available in a broad set of eMLC and SLC capacities. It can be deployed as either direct attached storage (DAS) that sits within the server to deliver high performance—or it can be deployed in combination with EMC XtremSW™
Cache (formerly EMC VFCache™) server caching software to turbocharge network
storage array performance while maintaining the level of protection required by mission-critical application environments.
XtremSF joins EMC’s growing portfolio of extreme-performance Flash products, which include Flash optimized hybrid storage arrays – EMC Isilon®, EMC VMAX® and EMC VNX®, as well as the EMC XtremIO (formerly Project X) all-Flash scale-out enterprise storage array.
XtremSF sits on the PCIe interconnect bus and thereby bypasses the overhead of the network storage access, reducing response time from milliseconds to microseconds. By storing data locally on the server, I/O bottleneck is alleviated to deliver maximum read and write performance. XtremSF can deliver as high as 785,000 IOPS and access latencies as low as 30 microseconds, thereby providing memory- class performance with storage-class capacity. It is a single low profile card (half-height, half-length) that can fit into any rack mount server and the compact universal form factor reduces data center sprawl. XtremSF is available in 350GB SLC, 550GB MLC, 700GB MLC, 700GB SLC, 1.4TB MLC and 2.2TB MLC
capabilities, thereby making it the industry’s highest capacity card in the smallest footprint. The hardware is supported in Linux and Windows environments, and is certified interoperable with VMware vSphere for optimal performance of virtual machines and desktops. Since, the card acts as both read and write accelerator, XtremSF is optimal for high-transactional, high performance workloads often
associated with web 2.0 applications, VDI environments, high performance computing and high performance trading applications. It can also be used to accelerate analytics, reporting, data modeling, indexes, batch processing, database dumps and other temporary workloads.
EMC XtremSW™ Cache is intelligent caching software that leverages server-based flash technology to reduce latency and accelerate throughput for application performance
improvement. XtremSW™ Cache accelerates reads and protects data by using a write-through cache to the networked storage to deliver persistent high availability and disaster recovery. While it can be coupled with any server flash hardware, XtremSW™ Cache is optimized with EMC XtremSF™.
The XtremSW™ Cache, by sitting in the server, bypasses the overhead of network storage access, reducing response time from milliseconds to microseconds. Since, its puts the data into the server I/O stack, closer to the application, there is a dramatic improvement in performance, both in throughput (over 300 percent) and reduction in latency by as much as 50 percent. XtremSW™ Cache is optimized for web applications, OLTP, CRM, and ERP databases, email applications and other read intensive workloads with small working sets.
EMC also announced the release of XtremIO™ which is purpose built to leverage Flash and deliver new levels of real-world performance, administrative ease, and advanced data services. Its scale-out architecture delivers higher levels of “functional IOPS” to applications that require high levels of random I/O performance, such as OLTP databases, server virtualization and VDI.
XtremIO system exceeds 150K functional 4K mixed read/write IOPS, and 250K functional 4K read IOPS for each ‘X-Brick’ (the scale-out building blocks for the XtremIO array), and over 1.2 million functional 4K mixed read/write IOPS, and 2 million functional 4K read IOPS when scaled out to a cluster of eight X-Bricks. The XtremIO array delivers this level of performance with consistent sub-millisecond response times while running the industry’s richest set of integrated and Flash-optimized data
services including Flash-specific data protection, thin provisioning, global
inline data reduction, accelerated VMware provisioning through VAAI, and
writeable snapshots.
